Sandy Weeden, Director of Athletics

Sandy Weeden is entering her 30th year of service at the University and in the Department of Physical Education and Athletics. During her tenure, Weeden has coached women's basketball, softball and tennis and served as the intramural director of women.

At Stony Brook, Weeden spent 23 years as the Director of Women's Athletics before becoming the Director of both Men's and Women's Athletics four years ago. During her career, she has been an active member within the NCAA having served four years on the women's soccer committee and the powerful NCAA Council for four years, been a member of the NCAA's Olympic Liaison Committee for two years, the Academic Requirements Committee for three years and the graduation rates committee for three years. She is also an Associate Professor of Education and was enshrined in the Cortland State College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987.

Outside of the NCAA, Weeden has also been instrumental within other collegiate organizations. She served as the President of the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association , the Vice President and Chair of the Scholar Athlete Selection Committee and the Chair of the Service Award Committee. As a member of the ECAC, Weeden was a volleyball and basketball selection committee member as well as the chair of the volleyball selection committee chair.

She has been a driving force behind Stony Brook's move to Division I and was the New England Collegiate Conference's Chair of the Women's Basketball Committee for the last two years.

In addition to her work with the NCAA, Weeden has had a major impact at the university level. Her outstanding work as a coach, a professor and athletic administrator have earned her numerous honors that include Stony Brook Women's Athletics Coach of the Year (1972 & 1976), the NYSWCAA Service Award (1985) and has twice been recognized for exceptional service to undergraduate education at the University at Stony Brook (1985 &1991). Her exceptional work at the university has landed her a position on the Undergraduate Excellence Awards selection committee in addition to her work as a member of the Administrative Hearing Board.

Weeden earned her undergraduate degree in physical education from SUNY-Cortland in 1967 and completed her master's degree in education at UNC-Greensboro in 1972.
