Stony Brook Track and Field Has Seven Top-Eight Finishes at METS

New York, N.Y. - Stony Brook's track and field team performed well today at the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Championships at the Armory Track in New York, N.Y. Seven Seawolves placed within the top-eight, including senior Mubaarak Muhammad (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) who broke the Stony Brook school record in the triple jump. Muhammad's distance of 14.33 meters was good enough for fourth place and qualified him for the IC4A's. This is the first time in his career Muhammad has qualified for the IC4A's. Senior Justin Miller (Smithtown, N.Y.) placed third in the shot put for the Seawolves (14.45), while junior Jeremy Vasquez (Huntington, N.Y.) finished just a few places behind in seventh (13.10). The other top finishers for the men's team included the distance medley team of sophomore Daire Bermingham (Portmarnock, Ireland), senior Melvin Genao (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.), junior Gary Chan (Flushing, N.Y.) and sophomore Kurt Wende (Williamsville, N.Y.), who finished sixth (10:36.27) and the 4X800 relay team of sophomore Brandon Leung (Rego Park, N.Y.), Bermingham, freshman Shamell Forbes (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) and sophomore Chris Morfesi (West Babylon, N.Y.), who placed seventh (8:07.08).
On the women's side, sophomore Lisa Voltaire (Stockholm, Sweden) was the top individual performer, placing third in the 800-meter with a time of 2:15.73. The women's distance medley team of freshman Carolina Cortes (Woodmere, N.Y.), Voltaire, sophomore Stephanie Vos (Apalachin, N.Y.) and freshman Leanne Skrabacz (West Seneca, N.Y.), also had a third place finish (12:31.44). The Seawolves' track and field team's next meet will take place in Boston, Mass. on February 8th. |
