Women's Track and Field Ties for Fourth at America East Championships; Men Finish Sixth

Boston, Mass. - Stony Brook's women's track and field team finished tied for fourth at the America East Championships in Boston, Mass., while the men's team placed sixth overall. The men were led by sophomore Tim Hodge (Tawa, New Zealand) who won the 3,000-meter with a time of 8:13.62, just a shade over the school record. Senior Melvin Genao (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) had the next highest finish for the men's team, placing second in the 500-meter (1:04.81). The Seawolves had three men earn points in the 1,000-meter: junior Gary Chan (Flushing, N.Y.) finished fourth (2:34.74), freshman Alexander Felicier (Bronx, N.Y.) crossed seventh (2:38.46) and senior Chris Roertgen (Smithtown, N.Y.) placed eighth (2:42.99). Stony Brook also earned points in the mile, with sophomore Daire Bermingham (Portmarnock, Ireland) finishing third (4:14.58), in the 800-meter with sophomore Brandon Leung (Rego Park, N.Y.) placing eighth (2:00.37), in the 4X400-relay with the team of Genao, Leung, junior Merlon Pinnock (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and senior Mubaarak Muhammad (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) crossing sixth (3:22.11) and in the triple jump with Muhammad placing fourth (13.93-meters). The women's team had three second-place finishes today. Freshman Lucy Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand) placed second in the mile (4:46.73), sophomore Laura Huet (Carrickmines, Ireland) did the same in the 3,000-meter (9:46.48) and the 4X800-relay team of Van Dalen, sophomore Lisa Voltaire (Stockholm, Sweden), freshman Jessica Hampson (Smithtown, N.Y.) and freshman Holly Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand) just missed first with a time of 9:09.12.
Stony Brook had three other women score in the 3,000-meter. Senior Dana Hastie (Wellington, New Zealand) crossed fourth (9:52.52), freshman Ruth Gillespie (Carrickfergus, N. Ireland) followed her in fifth (9:57.60) and senior Kerry Salzano (Staten Island, N.Y) placed seventh (10:01.02). The women's other top finishers were: Holly Van Dalen who crossed third in the mile, just a few seconds after her twin sister (4:51.67), Voltaire who placed fourth in the 1000-meter (2:55.66) and freshman Carolina Cortes (Woodmere, N.Y.) who followed Voltaire in the 1,000-meter with a time of 2:57.24, which was good enough for seventh. The Seawolves' track and field teams will be back in action next Friday at the NYU Last Chance meet in New York, N.Y.
