Nunez, Brims, Farrell Record Wins At SCSU Invitational

New Haven, Conn. - Jackie Nunez, Jonathan Brims and Brian Farrell all won individual events to lead the Stony Brook track and field team at the Southern Connecticut State University Invitational on Saturday. Nunez won the 800m in 2:14.01, the third-fastest time in Stony Brook history. Brims also captured the 800m, winning the race in 1:55.64. Farrell was victorious in the 5000m with a time of 15:37.99. The women's team had a very solid performance on the day with four other Seawolves recording runner-up finishes: Nicola Baker in the 200m (26.38), Jackie Berman in the 1500m (4:52.92), Abigail Nathaniel in the long jump (17 fee, 8 3/4 inches) and Laura Hixson in the 5000m (18:13.78). The 4x100m relay team of Dana Shepherd, Baker, Corinne Leake and Nathaniel also took second with a time of 50:14. Freshman Lauren Gengo took third place in the 800m (2:19.84), while Leake was third in the 400m (59:57). The men's team also had some impressive performances. For the second week in a row, Craig Matuza broke a school record, this time in the hammer throw. He took second place with a throw of 172 feet. six inches. He also took second in the discus (145 feet, three inches) and third in the shot put (49 feet, 2 1/2 inches). Dave DeWolfe and Dale Summerville finished second and third, respectively, in the 1500m with times of 4:02.41 and 4:02.54. Other scoring performances came from Joseph Marino, who was fifth in the triple jump; Joesph Cardinale, who was sixth in the shot put and discus; Constantinos Sevdinoglou, who was seventh in the hammer; Preston Smolinski, who was seventh in the steeplechase; and Omar Moore, who was seventh in the triple jump. |
