Van Dalen, Hodge Win Individual Championships

Orono, Maine - Freshman Holly Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand) and sophomore Tim Hodge (Tawa, New Zealand) each won an individual championship during day two of the America East Outdoor Track & Field Championship Sunday in Orono, Maine. The women's team finished eighth overall and the men took seventh.

Van Dalen was the first runner to cross in the 1,500-meter event, finishing in a time of 4:28.43. Her time is the fastest run by any Seawolf this year and is an ECAC qualifying time. Sophomore Laura Huet (Carrickmines, Ireland) also ran in the event, finishing fourth with a time of 4:33.42, which also qualifies her for the ECAC Championship.

Hodge completed the 5,000-meter event in 14:30.06, which was two seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Stony Brook placed two other runners in the top-ten in the 5,000-meter; sophomores Iain Whitfield (Stroud, England) took third (14:44.89) and Daire Bermingham (Portmarnock, Ireland) crossed tenth (15:24.18).

In the women's 5,000-meter, seniors Dana Hastie (Wellington, New Zealand) crossed second (16:38.07) and Elizabeth Carlson (Lincoln, R.I.) took sixth (17:59.18).

Other top-ten finishers for the women's team were: sophomore Lisa Voltaire (Stockholm, Sweden) who crossed fourth in the 800-meter (2:14.96), sophomore Stephanie Vos (Apalachin, N.Y.) who finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:03.99) and the 4X800-meter relay team of Van Dalen, Voltaire, Huet and sophomore Jessica Hampson (Smithtown, N.Y.) who took second with an ECAC qualifying time of 9:16.05.
 

 

On the men's side, senior Mubaarak Muhammad (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) had the highest finish in the field events, taking second in the triple jump (14.38). Senior Justin Miller (Smithtown, N.Y.) placed third in the discus (43.23) and sixth in the shot put (14.74).

Also finishing in the top-ten for the men's team was sophomore Alex Felce (Stroud, England) who finished third in the 1,500-meter (3:50.85) and senior Melvin Genao (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) who took seventh in the 400-meter (49.54).
