Cross Country Has Strong Start to 2008 Season

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook University's cross country team won both the men's and women's races at the Stony Brook Invitational on Friday afternoon. Junior Jessica Hampson (Smithtown, N.Y.) was the top finisher for the women and sophomore Tim Hodge (Tawa, New Zealand) crossed first for the men's team.

Hampson completed the 4,100-meter course in a time 14:03.42, 14 seconds ahead of teammate and second-place finisher sophomore Holly Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand). The Seawolves took the top six spots, with sophomore Lucy van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand) taking third (14:47.62), junior Laura Huet (Carrickmines, Ireland) crossing fourth (15:07.16), sophomore Carolina Cortes (Woodmere, N.Y.) took fifth (15:31.71) and freshman Kristal Conklin finished sixth (16:13.46).

The men's team took the top four spots in their 6,200-meter race, led by Hodge's time of 19:33.60. Junior Daire Bermingham (Portmarnock, Ireland) finished second (19:35.42), junior Alex Felce (Stroud, England) placed third (19:53.42) and junior Iain Whitfield (Stroud, England) crossed fourth (20:23.14).
 

 

The Seawolves will be action next Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park, N.Y. when they compete in the Fordham Invitational, starting at 10:00 a.m.
