Men's and Women's Cross Country Place Two in the Top-Ten at Stony Brook Invitational

Stony Brook, N.Y. - For a second straight week Stony Brook's cross country teams hosted a home meet on their new course, this time hosting the Stony Brook Invitational. Both Seawolf teams place a pair of runners in the top-10, led by sophomore Tim Hodge (Tawa, New Zealand) and junior Laura Huet (Carrickmines, Ireland).

Hodge led a 2-3 finish for Stony Brook in the 5.5K men's race. His time of 17:36.31 was a little more than 13 seconds behind the time of winner Ricardo Estremera of Albany and 9.3 seconds ahead of senior Shaun Krawitz (Auckland, New Zealand). The pair helped Stony Brook finish third in the final team standings in the event.

Giving SBU three in the top-20 was senior Kevin McCarthy (Nanuet, N.Y.) who finished 17th overall with a 19:06.41. Next across the finish line for the Seawolves was sophomore Chibber Sushank who was 25th with an effort of 19:36.39. Just behind him in 27th was junior Gary Chan (Flushing, N.Y.) in 27th in 19:39.57. Also running for Stony Brook was sophomore Brandon Leung (Rego Park, N.Y.) who finished 30th with a time of 20:00.16 and sophomore Scott Ulberg (Bellemore, N.Y.) who was 33rd with a clocking of 20:11.38.

On the women's side Huet made it two straight races for Stony Brook in which a Seawolf has crossed the finish line first, stopping the clock at 15:50.94 to win by nearly 17 seconds. Also placing in the top-10 for SBU was sophomore Lisa Voltaire (Stockholm, Sweden) who was sixth with her time of 17:09.47 on the 4.3K layout.
 

 

Freshman Kristina Doyle got a top-20 finish for Stony Brook with her 13th-place showing and a time of 18:02.16. The next three Seawolves crossed the line back-to-back-to-back in 21st, 22nd and 23rd. Junior Cheryl Armstrong (Riverhead, N.Y.) led the threesome with an 18:36.15, while freshman Kellyann Moniz (South Hamilton, Mass.) was just behind with a time of 18:44.98. Another freshman, Karina Kononenko (Glenn Cove, N.Y.) was less than six seconds behind in 18:50.44.

Freshman Kristen Connolly rounded out the Stony Brook field, finishing 28th with an effort of 19:24.62.

With their efforts, both teams are now ranked No. 14 in the Northeast Region which covers New York and New England.
