Jackie Nunez Wins Women's Title at 2003 America East Cross Country Championships

Albany, N.Y. - Senior Jackie Nunez captured the women's individual title to lead Stony Brook at the 2003 America East Cross Country Championships at the University at Albany on Saturday afternoon. Nunez led the Seawolves to their second consecutive second place finish after breaking her own course record of 17:31 for the 5K course. Her time tied for the sixth best in the 15-year history of the America East Women's Cross Country Championship. Nunez remains undefeated so far in 2003, winning each of the individual titles at the Seawolves' five meets this season.
It was the second consecutive year that a Stony Brook runner won the women's title, as former Seawolf All-American Jenny Payne captured the crown in 2002.
Dale Summerville finished fourth for the men's squad which finished sixth as a team, covering the 8K course in 25:10. It was the highest individual finish in the conference meet ever for the Stony Brook men. Nunez was followed by Laura Hixson in seventh in 18:19, Leonora Joy in eighth in 18:21, Elizabeth Carlson in 19th in 18:51, and Lauren Gengo in 35th in 19:12. The New Hampshire women's team captured three of the top five spots en route to a team score of 42, breaking Boston University's string of seven straight titles. Stony Brook was second with a team score of 70. Albany was third with 112, followed by Boston University with 116 and Binghamton with 117. Vermont was sixth with team score of 131. UMBC was seventh with a score of 154, followed by Maine (155), Northeastern (176) and Hartford (325). On the men's side, Summerville was followed by Brian Farrell in 12th in 25:53, Chris Hunt in 35th in 27:19, Preston Smolinski in 48th in 27:53, and Alejandro Gonzalez in 50th in 28:00. New Hampshire also captured the men's team title with a team score of 40. Albany was second with a team score of 64 followed by Boston University with 74. UMBC was fourth with a score of 114, Maine fifth with 115. Stony Brook was sixth with a team score of 145. Binghamton (201), Vermont (222), Northeastern (234) and Hartford (295) rounded out the field. |
