Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook University's women's cross country team claimed its second-straight America East Championship on Saturday, placing four runners in the top-10. Sophomore Tim Hodge (Tawa, New Zealand) took home the men's individual championship, placing first out of 76 runners. The men's team took second overall for the third-consecutive year.

"It was great to defend our title," said head coach Andy Ronan. "Obviously there is much more pressure on a team when they are trying to defend and what we did today was a fantastic team effort."

The Seawolves were led by sophomore Holly Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand) who took second in a time of 17:22.30. Junior Laura Huet (Carrickmines, Ireland) was close behind in third (17:30.5), sophomore Lucy van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand) crossed fifth (17:35.20), freshman Hayley Green (Wellington, New Zealand) finished sixth (17:37.80) and sophomore Carolina Cortes (Woodmere, N.Y.) crossed 13th (18:13.90).

"We are a young team, which bodes well for the future," said Ronan. "The girls knew what they had to do before the gun went off and they kept their heads in tough conditions."

In the men's race the Seawolves claimed the top-two spots with Hodge edging junior Alex Felce (Stroud, England) by just two seconds. Junior Daire Bermingham (Carrickfergus, Ireland) crossed 12th (26:08.10), while freshmen David Frankel (Woodbury, N.Y.) and Gerard Harley (Setauket, N.Y.) finished 22nd and 27th, respectively.

"We'd obviously love to have won the men's championships as well, but I'm pleased with the effort because we are much younger and less experienced in our fourth and fifth spots than we have been in the past," said Ronan.

"Tim and Alex were fantastic today. They took care of the rest of the field first and then went head-to-head with each other for the championship. They are best of friends and challenge each other in every race, which is a large part of why they are both so successful."

Next up for the cross country teams is the NCAA Regionals in Van Cortlandt Park in New York. The women will be looking to qualify for a return-trip to the NCAA Championships while Hodge and Felce will be attempting to qualify as individuals.
