Murillo's Grand Slam Caps Six-Run Comeback As Seawolves Down Bradley, 13-7
March 21, 2001 Homestead, FL - March 21, 2001
Homestead, FL - Ed Murillo was mired in an 0-for-10 slump and was hitting just .176 when he headed to the plate as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning Wednesday against Bradley. With one out, the bases loaded and the Seawovles down 7-6, Murillo came through with a grand slam and put the Seawolves ahead for good. It was all part of a six-run comeback as the Seawovles downed Bradley for the second time this week and improved to 8-6. After three scoreless innings, the Braves got on the board in the third inning with back-to-back homeruns, the first a three-run shot by Cory Jager and the second a solo homerun. Bradley tacked on one more in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 7-1 advantage and it looked like they were on cruise control. However, Ed Kull's double scored Rich Graham and Kull came around to score on a wild pitch to close the gap to 7-3 heading to the bottom of the seventh. Anthony Stutz (2-1) came on in the seventh to relieve starter Kevin Willi and held the Braves without a run. George Kearnes and Dwayne Whitaker led off the eighth with back-to-back solo homeruns and Graham followed with a double. After Blumberg and Matt Salmon reached, Kull reached on an error and Graham came in to score, cutting the gap to 7-6. Jimmy McCurdy struck out, bringing Murillo to the plate. Murillo took the first pitch over the left field wall, giving Stony Brook a 10-7 led. Alex Trezza followed with a solo shot and all told, the Seawolves hit four homeruns in the inning. Stony Brook added two runs in the ninth to preserve the win. Stutz got the victory, working the final three innings while allowing just one hit and no runs. The Seawolves play a doubleheader Thursday and wrap-up the nine-game Florida swing with a game Friday morning. |
