Baseball Outlasted 8-7 by New York Tech

April 4, 2005

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook baseball team put together a six-run sixth inning rally to tie the game but were unable to surpass New York Tech as it fell 8-7 to the Bears on Monday afternoon at University Field. The loss drops the Seawolves' record to 9-15 this season while NYIT improves to 6-9.

New York Tech got on the board immediately as a leadoff triple by Kraig Binick was followed by a sacrifice fly by Mike Kenefick to give the Bears a quick 1-0 lead. NYIT added to its lead with four runs in the third inning to take a 5-0 advantage. David Johnson opened the scoring in the inning with a two-run single up the middle with the bases loaded and Bryan Pastor followed with a fly ball that got lost in the sun and fell for a double and plated two more runs. The Bears took a 7-0 lead an inning later as Binick lofted a deep fly ball to left field that bounced off the top of wall for a two-run home run.

The Seawolves got on the board with an RBI single by Chris DiBiaso in the fifth inning before they put together a furious six-run rally in the sixth to tie the game at seven apiece. Matt Devins tripled to open the inning and scored one battter later on an Isidro Fortuna double. The Seawolves then loaded the bases for Tom Pennino, who plated two runs with a double down the right field line to pull the Brook within three at 7-4. The inning continued as Will Brumfield scored on an error by the New York Tech shortstop Mike MacMillan and the Seawolves tied the game on back-to-back sacrifice flies by Peter Milani and DiBiaso.

The game would not remain tied for long, however, as NYIT answered with a run in the top of the seventh inning. Kenefick reached base to start the inning on an error by Devins and eventually came around to score on a two-out RBI single by Bryan Pastor to put the Bears up 8-7.

The Seawolves threatened in the ninth inning as Devins led off with a single through the left side of the infield, but NYIT pulled a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play to kill any hopes of a Stony Brook comeback.

Devins and Fortuna tallied two hits apiece while Pennino and DiBiaso drove in two runs each to lead the Seawolves at the plate. Nick Abel suffered the loss despite allowing just one unearned run in 5.1 innings of stellar relief.

Chris Perez (1-2) threw six innings to pick up the win for NYIT, while Robert Benenati threw three scoreless innings in relief to earn his second save of the year.

The Seawolves are back in action this Wednesday when they travel to St. Francis (N.Y.) to take on the Terriers at 3 p.m.
