Stony Brook Bats Erupt as Baseball Defeats St. Francis, 14-7

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook baseball team utilized 18 hits to score 14 runs as they defeated St. Francis, 14-7. Andres Perez tallied three RBI and Chris Sipp and Chris Cruz each drove in two as the Seawolves have won seven of eight. With the win Stony Brook improves to 7-15 and the Terriers fall to 2-15. St. Francis opened up the scoring in the contest when Tom Pento scored on a wild pitch in the third. The Seawolves responded plating three runs in the third, six runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to build a 10-1 lead. Perez drove in three of the ten runs in the three inning span, including a two-run shot over the left field fence in the fourth. The Terriers kept things interesting, scoring five runs off of five hits in the sixth inning to cut the lead to four. Stony Brook scored three runs in the seventh inning, when Cruz tripled in a pair of runs and later scored off of a Steven Mazzurco double to build a seven run lead. The two teams would each score a run in the eighth and Kurt Jung threw a scoreless ninth to seal the game, 14-7. Brian Murtagh (2-1) was the Seawolf of record, allowing only one hit and one run in 3.0 innings of work. Perez finished the day 2-for-3 with two runs scored, three driven in and a homer. Sipp was 2-for-3 with a scored and two RBI and Steve Legrett was a perfect 2-for-2 off the bench, driving in one and scoring twice.
The Seawolves return to action this Friday when they open up America East Conference play against Binghamton. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 P.M. |
