Fier's RBI Single Lifts Stony Brook Baseball Over Fordham, 7-6

Bronx, N.Y. - Keith Fier delivered the game-winning RBI in the top of the seventh inning as the Seawolves edged Fordham, 7-6, on Wednesday afternoon. With the win the Stony Brook baseball team improves to 15-14 overall. Fordham falls to 19-15.

The Seawolves jumped to an early 5-1 lead when they plated five runs in the second inning. The Seawolves took advantage of five Ram walks as they scored five times on only two hits. Justin Echevarria drove in the final two runs of the inning with an RBI single to plate Chris Sipp and Brian Witkowski.

Fordham responded with two runs in the third and tied the game up at 5-5 in the fourth when Rich Goulian hit an RBI triple to right center and later scored on a sacrifice fly.

Stony Brook regained the lead in the fifth when Steven Mazzurco singled home Kyle Traylor, only to have the game tied at 6-6 in the bottom half of the inning when Bobby DiNardo scored on an RBI ground out.

Fier delivered the game-winning RBI to give the Seawolves a 7-6 lead in the seventh when he plated Traylor with an RBI single.

Rob Leonard pitched a scoreless seventh, eighth and ninth inning as the Seawolves held on for the 7-6 win.

Freshman Joe Goglia (1-0) picked up his first win as a Seawolf, allowing one run in 2.0 innings of work. Leonard picked up his first save of the year.

Fier finished the day 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI to lead the Stony Brook bats. Sipp was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Echevarria was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
 

 

The Seawolves return to action on Friday when they welcome America East rival Albany for a four game set. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
