Late Inning Heroics Lift Seawolves Past NY Tech, 6-5

April 25, 2003

Stony Brook's David Wood helped push the Seawolves to a 6-5 win over the visiting New York Tech Bears Friday afternoon by smashing two homeruns and tallying three of the six runs in the Seawolves 21st win of 2003. Stony Brook improves to 21-11 overall and New York Tech slips to 7-21.

Wood came to the plate with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning with the game knotted at five having already knocked his second homerun of the season in the second inning. He would put the Seawolves on top to stay when he drove a Kyle Patten pitch opposite field and over the wall.

Wood also produced early game heroics when he blasted a homerun in the second that brought home Mike Russo and gave the Seawolves a 2-0 lead. The Brook pushed the advantage to 3-0 when Andrew Larsen brought home Garrett Renner with a sacrifice fly in the third.

NY Tech responded with a big seventh in which they knotted the game at three. Ronny Reyes started the rallying by doubling to left and later scored on a double by Garrett McDevitt. The Bears added two more when Mike Kearney and McDevitt each advanced home on two Seawolf errors on a Andrew Karkoulas shot to short.

The Seawolves would take the lead back in the seventh when Kevin Solano score Jim McCurdy and Matt Devins brought Ed Kull home with a sac fly to center, but the rally was short lived as the Bears responded with two in the eighth to knot the game at five with a homer by Tim Smith and a double by McDevitt.

Kevin Fitzerald received the win and improves to 1-1 on the year. He struck out two in 1.1 innings of work and allowed no hits. Starter Jon Lewis went six innings, striking out six and allowing just one earned run.

The Seawolves are back in action tomorrow as they travel to Old Westbury, N.Y. to play Pace at 3 p.m.
