Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

Orono, Maine - Freshman Stephen Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with three RBI as the Stony Brook University baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep with a 4-2 victory over the Maine Black Bears on Saturday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond. Sophomore Jeremy Nowak (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) hit a two-run home run and picked up the save to lead the Seawolves to a 5-4 win over the Black Bears in game one. Stony Brook finishes the day at 23-16 overall and 10-5 in the America East while Maine falls to 16-20-1 and 4-7.

Marino gave the Seawolves an early 2-0 lead in game two with a two-out two-run single in the second. The Black Bears got a run back in the third on a RBI single from Jarrett Lukas.

SBU pushed its lead to 3-1 in the sixth on a run-scoring single from freshman Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario) but the Black Bears answered back in the bottom of the inning when Curt Smith scored on a Tony Patane fielder's choice. Marino struck once again in the top of the seventh with a two-out RBI double to give the Seawolves a 4-2 lead.

The Black Bears loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh against sophomore reliever Jordan Purington (Westbrook, Maine) who then got Smith to ground into a double play before striking out Myckie Lugbauer to end the game. Junior Mike Errigo (Bayside, N.Y.) picked up the win for the Seawolves, allowing two runs and five hits in 5.1 innings of work.

Nowak gave SBU an early lead in the first game as well with a two-run home run to left in the opening inning. But the Blacks Bear got a run back in the bottom of the first on a Smith RBI single and then tied it in the fifth when Joe Mercurio stole home on a double steal.

The Seawolves regained the lead in the sixth on a RBI single from junior Keith Fier (Armonk, N.Y.) and then added two more in the seventh on another RBI single from Fier and a run-scoring hit from Marshall. The Black Bears threatened in the bottom of the seventh though, putting runners on first and third with one out against Stony Brook senior starter Gary Novakowski (Prospect, Conn.).

The Seawolves then turned to Nowak who allowed an RBI single to Lucas but then got Smith to ground into a fielder's choice for the second out. Lugbauer followed with an RBI single to make it 5-4 but Nowak got Patane to line out to right with runners on first and third to end the game.

Novakowski earned the win for the Seawolves, giving up four runs and five hits in 6.1 innings. Fier led the Seawolves offense with two hits and two RBI. Matt Jebb took the loss for the Black Bears, allowing three runs and five hits in 5.2 innings of work.

The teams will wrap up their four-game on Sunday at Mahaney Diamond. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
