Nine-Run Seventh Inning Leads Baseball To Doubleheader Split With Lafayette

May 3, 2008

Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Junior Michael Tansey (Valley Stream, N.Y.) scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch to cap a nine-run seventh inning as the Stony Brook University baseball team rallied for a 13-8 victory over the Lafayette Leopards in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at University Field. Zach Fritz tossed a three-hit shutout to lead Lafayette to a 3-0 win in the first game. Stony Brook goes to 26-17 with the split while Lafayette finishes the day at 23-22.

SBU entered the seventh inning of game two down 8-0 but Tansey singled to lead off, the first of seven straight Seawolves to reach base. Tansey scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch and freshman Nick Thode (Huntington Station, N.Y.) followed with a run-scoring single. Junior Keith Fier (Armonk, N.Y.) drove in the third run of the inning with a bases-loaded single and junior Chad Rebecca (Mount Prospect, Ill.) then came home on a passed ball with sophomore Mike Stephan (Patchogue, N.Y.) at the plate.

A RBI groundout from junior Brian Witkowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) made it 8-5 and Dyer then drove an RBI single through the left side to draw Stony Brook within two. Tansey followed with a run-scoring double and junior Steven Mazzurco (Selden, N.Y.) then grounded out to shortstop to drive in Dyer with the tying run. Lafayette reliever Tyler Cromey then uncorked a wild pitch allowing Tansey to scamper home with the go-ahead run. The Seawolves tallied nine hits in the inning, sending 14 batters to the plate.

The Seawolves added four insurance runs in the eighth highlighted by run-scoring hits from Dyer, Mazzurco and junior Justin Echevarria (Uniondale, N.Y.) to secure the split of the doubleheader. Sophomore Matt Harloff (Valley Stream, N.Y.) picked up the win for the Seawolves while sophomore Jordan Purington (Westbrook, Maine) earned the save with 2.0 scoreless innings.

Lafayette took the early lead in game two with a run in the third on a Daniel Bierce RBI double and three more in the fourth highlighted by run-scoring hits from A.J. Pissari and Ryan Roberts. The Leopards added a run in fifth on a Joe Ezekiel solo home run and Justin Shepherd followed with a three-run homer in the seventh to make it 8-0.

Brad Woodfield took the loss for the Leopards who were led offensively by Ezekiel and Roberts who recorded three hits apiece. Dyer paced the Stony Brook offense with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored.

Ezekiel gave Lafayette an early lead in game one, smashing a two-run home run to right-center in the second to give the Leopards a 2-0 lead. Lafayette added a run in the fifth on a Bierce RBI single and that is all the support Fritz would need as he allowed only a Fier single in the fifth after giving up two hits in the first inning.

Senior Tom Koehler (New Rochelle, N.Y.) took the loss for the Seawolves, allowing three runs and five hits in his 7.0 innings of work. Fritz picked up the victory for the Leopards, striking out two without walking a batter. Ezekiel carried the Lafayette offense with two hits and two RBI.

The teams will wrap up their four-game series on Sunday with a doubleheader at Lafayette. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
