Vermont Tops Baseball, 3-2
May 5, 2006 Burlington, Vt. - The Stony Brook baseball team was edged, 3-2, by Vermont on Friday evening. The loss drops the Seawolves to 16-23 on the season and 6-5 in America East play. Andres Perez tallied two hits and a run scored in the loss. Stony Brook opened up the scoring in the top of the second inning. With one out, Brian Witkowski singled and then stole second. Two batters later, Isidro Fortuna hit a single through the left side to plate Witkowski and give the Seawolves an early one run lead. The Catamounts answered in the bottom of the frame, when they took advantage of a Stony Brook error and strung together three singles to plate a pair of runs and give Vermont the 2-1 lead. The Seawolves tied the game up in the top of the fifth when Perez led off the inning with a walk. Following a hit batsman and a double steal, the Seawolves had runners on second and third with one out. Chris DiBiaso came through with an RBI single to knot the game at 2-2. In the bottom of the sixth, Vermont would take the lead when Jason Carey delivered the game-winning RBI single to plate Kyle Massie with two-outs. Stony Brook would only tally one more hit in the contest as the Seawolves fell 3-2. Tom Koehler (3-4) shouldered the loss for Stony Brook, allowing three runs in six innings of work and striking out nine. Perez finished the day 2-for-3 with a run scored and Isidro Fortuna was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Gary Novakowski threw two hitless innings in relief.
The Seawolves return to action when they continue their series with Vermont. The two squads will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12:00 P.M. |
