Stony Brook Bats Power Seawolves Over UMBC, 12-3

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Seawolf offense exploded for 20 hits and 12 runs and Brian Witkowski blasted his first career home run and hit for the cycle as Stony Brook defeated UMBC, 12-3 on a rain soaked Friday afternoon. With the win the Seawolves improve to 19-27 on the year and 9-8 in America East play.

The Seawolves opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. In the opening stanza, the Seawolves scored three runs capped by Chris DiBiaso RBI single as they scored runs in seven of the eight innings in the win.

Witkowski led the game off with a bunt single, ripped an RBI double down the left field line in the second inning, blasted his first career home run to lead off the fifth and hit an RBI triple to left-center to complete the cycle in the seventh inning.

Tom Koehler (4-4) picked up the win, throwing seven effective innings allowing three runs and striking out three. Stephen Zydor threw two scoreless innings out of the pen.

Witkowski paced the Stony Brook offense, going 4-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored, Andres Perez was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, DiBiaso finished the game 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI, Rob Leonard was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Chris Sipp was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
 

 

The Seawolves will continue their series with UMBC tomorrow with a doubleheader at noon. With the win, head coach Matt Senk earned career win 399, one win shy of 400.
