Men's Basketball Dumps New England College In Home Opener, 107-45
Nov. 21, 2000 The Stony Brook Seawolves (1-1) opened their home season in spectacular fashion, jumping out to a 27-2 lead and cruising to a 107-45 victory over Division III New England College (1-2) Tuesday night at the USB Sports Complex. The win represented the largest margin of victory since a 70-point win over Lehman in 1992-93. With the score tied at 2-2, Stony Brook ran off 25 straight points over the next six minutes to take command. Stony Brook did much of the damage from the outside - hitting five three-pointers during the run, three by Josh Little. Jon Nadar's jumper closed the gap to 31-9 with 6:54 remaining in the first half, but the Seawolves answered with a 22-5 run to close the first stanza. DJ Munir had seven points in that stretch - port of an 11-point, five assists performance by the freshman. Four players had double figures by the half as Jairus McCollum had 11 points and Leon Brisport had 10 points and eight rebounds. Stony Brook extended the lead to 64-19 on Little's three-pointer with 18:01 remaining. NEC pulled to within 64-29, the closest the Pilgrims would get. The Seawolves broke the century mark with 3:35 remaining, when Trevor Bryant's layup extended the lead to 101-42. The Seawolves had six players in double figures, as Little led the way with 15, going 5-of-6 from three-point range. Brisport notched a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards, while McCollum chipped in 13 points. Munir contributed 11 points and six assists, while Nelson Pena and J.B. Bennett had 10 apiece. The Pilgrims were led by Dan Romano's 10 points and seven rebounds. The Seawolves return to action when they host Hofstra at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25. |
