Lucas, Young Lead Men's Basketball To 70-43 Rout Of Dartmouth

Dec. 1, 2007

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior Ricky Lucas (Herndon, Va.) scored a game-high 19 points and junior Demetrius Young (Sacramento, Calif.) added 12 points to go along with 14 rebounds to lead the Stony Brook men's basketball team to a 70-43 victory over the Dartmouth Big Green Saturday afternoon at Stony Brook Arena, the Seawolves first victory of the 2007-08 season. Stony Brook improves to 1-6 with the victory while the Big Green fall to 3-4.

"It's nice to get the first victory [of the season]," Stony Brook head coach Steve Pikiell said. "Our three seniors really played well and the rest of the team followed their lead. It was a great team victory."

Lucas, the America East Player of the Game, scored 12 of his 19 in the first half and also finished the game with eight boards. Young's double-double was the first of the season for the Seawolves and the first for Stony Brook since senior Emanuel Neto (Luanda, Angola) recorded one against Maine last season. The victory was the largest since the Seawolves defeated the Rhode Island College 95-51 in the 2002-03 season.

The teams traded baskets early but with the Big Green up 6-4 the Seawolves went on a 8-0 run capped by back-to-back hoops from Young to take a 12-6 lead. The Seawolves took their largest lead of game to that point at 21-10 on an alley-oop to Young with 7:46 left to force the Big Green to call time. Lucas pushed margin to 13 a possession later with a beautiful sweeping lay-in.

The Seawolves scored four of the final six points on a Beauford floater and Lucas pull-up jumper to take a 30-15 lead to the locker room. Lucas finished the half with a team-high 12 points for the Seawolves who shot 46.4 percent in the first half.

Stony Brook opened the second half right where it had left off in the first, going on a 10-2 to open up a 40-17 run lead on a turnaround jumper from sophomore Rio Pitt. The Seawolves eventually took a 46-21 lead with 14:56 left on a Young lay-up before Dartmouth briefly went on a 9-0 run to cut the margin to 46-30 but that it as close as the Big Green would get the rest of the way. Stony Brook immediately answered with a 12-4 run capped by a old-fashioned three-point play from senior Mitchell Beauford (Queens, N.Y.) to make it 58-34 with 7:35 left and the Seawolves coasted from there to snap the Big Green's two-game winning streak.

Alex Barnett tallied a team-high 15 points for Dartmouth who shot just two of 15 from three and were out-rebounded by the Seawolves 42-23.

The Seawolves return to action on Wednesday, traveling to take on Lehigh at 7:30 p.m.
