Nov. 20, 2009
Wagner Game Notes
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Off to a 2-0 start for the first time since the 1997-98 season, the Stony Brook University men's basketball team will travel to Staten Island to take on the Wagner Seahawks on Saturday night. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. The game can be heard locally on WUSB 90.1 FM or goseawolves.org with Jeff Bernstein '92, Mike Solano and Curt Hylton on the call. Fans can also follow the contest with Live Stats at goseawolves.org. SBU will be looking to start a season 3-0 for the first time since the 1994-95 campaign. The Seawolves are coming off an 87-53 victory over Mount Saint Mary on Monday night at Pritchard Gymnasium. Senior Desmond Adedeji (Landover Hills, Md.) led five Seawolves in double-figures with a career-high 16 points while sophomore Tommy Brenton (Columbia, Md.) was three assists shy of a triple-double as he tallied 11 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists. Brenton's seven assists were the most by a Stony Brook a player since senior Eddie Castellanos (Jersey City, N.J.) recorded eight at #19 Notre Dame on Dec. 30, 2006. Senior Muhammad El-Amin (Lansing, Mich.) enters Saturday's game ranked second in the America East in scoring (20.0 points per game) and has scored in double-figures in 22 straight games dating back to last season. The 6-5 guard needs just six more points to reach 500 for his Stony Brook career Stony Brook currently ranks second in the America East in 10 categories including scoring offense (81.0 points per game), scoring defense (55.0 points per game), field goal percentage (.470) and field goal percentage defense (.380). SBU recorded 19 assists against Mount Saint Mary on Monday, which was their most in a game since tallying 22 in a 95-51 victory over Rhode Island College on Dec. 2, 2002.
This will be the home opener for Wagner, which dropped an 81-72 decision at Lafayette in their season-opener last Friday. Freshman Ryan Conrad scored a team-high 20 points for Wagner, who put four players in double-figures. The Seahawks shot 35 three-pointers, knocking down 14 of them. Wagner lost its four leading scorers from last season's 16-14 team and has seven freshmen on this year's squad. The Seahawks were picked 10th in the 12 team Northeast Conference in the preseason coaches poll. This will be the fourth match-up between the schools since the Seawolves moved to Division I in the 1999-2000 season. Wagner has won the last two meetings including a 65-62 triumph at Pritchard Gymnasium last season. The Seawolves only previous visit to Staten Island during SBU's 10 years in Division I came in head coach Steve Pikiell's first season at Stony Brook and resulted in a 67-54 Wagner victory. Senior Andrew Goba (Durban, South Africa) is the only current Seawolves player to play in that game, grabbing three rebounds in 16 minutes of action. |
