GAME ON ! - Stony Brook and Elon Square Off In Football Saturday at 3 p.m.

Sept. 5, 2008

Stony Brook, N.Y. -

Game Notes

A little wind and rain called Hanna is not going to keep the Stony Brook football team from its scheduled meeting with No. 17 Elon in Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Saturday. The Seawolves and Phoenix are still scheduled to kick off at 3 p.m. Fresh off a victory over Colgate last week, Stony Brook will be looking to extend its home winning streak to seven games against Elon in the Phoenix's fist visit to LaValle.

Kickoff

After its successful open of the season with a win over Colgate, Stony Brook will be trying to make it two in a row when it hosts No. 17/19 Elon of the Southern Conference. It will be the second meet¬ing between the two squads over each team's last three games, as the two squared off in the final game of the 2007 season. Last week Stony Brook won its second straight season opener and sixth straight at home with a 42-26 win over Colgate. The Seawolves got it done with 270 yards worth of rushing, including an impressive 147-yard effort from freshman Edwin Gowins. After falling behind 3-0, Stony Brook put up 28 straight points to put the game out of reach. The Seawolf defense also came up big, intercepting three passes, two by junior Chris Richards.

The Opponent

The preseason No. 15 team in both polls, Elon enters the 2008 season as one of the top teams from the powerful Southern Con¬ference. Last week the Phoenix and No. 4 Richmond tangled in an early season match-up of ranked teams that saw the Spiders come out on top by a 28-10 score. Elon boasts one of the top quarterback/receiver combinations in the nation in sophomore Scott Riddle and junior Terrell Hudgins. The Phoenix passed for 243 yards against Richmond, with Hudgins grabbing 10 balls for 78 yards. On the 2008 Payton Award watch list, Hudgins is just four catches shy of 200 for his career. While Elon had a good night passing, Richmond held the Phoenix to just 22 yards rushing and sacked Riddle three times.

The Series

Meeting for just the first time a year ago, Stony Brook and Elon will clash for the second time in three games this week. The two squads squared off in the season finale in 2007 at Elon, where the Phoenix took a 38-23 win after holding off a late Stony Brook rally. For the Seawolves Brandon Mason ran for 104 yards and a score while Lynell Suggs caught eight passes for 75 yards and one TD. For Elon, Hudgins grabbed nine passes for 99 yards and one score.

For those fans unable to attend the game, all of the action will be carried on WUSB (90.1 FM) with Mike Solano, Curt Hylton, Dave Vallone and Jeff Bernstein bringing listeners all the action. Fans can also watch the action through the Big South Conference Edge, which provides live video and audio streaming of the game and can be accessed through www.goseawolves.org.
