Gowins Named Stony Brook Athlete of the Week

Nov. 18, 2008

Stony Brook, N.Y. - For a second straight week Stony Book freshman running back Edwin Gowins (Bellport, N.Y.) has been named the Stony Brook Athlete of the Week. The nation's leading freshman rusher at the FCS level had another big game last week against VMI, earning Big South Offensive Player of the Week and several national honors.

Gowins continued his dominance over the second half of the season, leading Stony Brook with 250 rushing yards and three touchdowns against VMI. It was his second-straight 200-yard rushing game, in addition to the most rushing yards in a Big South game and the second-highest overall single-game rushing performance in League history. Gowins averaged 12.5 yards per carry, and on his second carry of the game, he ran for 36 yards and a score to give Stony Brook its first touchdown of the game. With the Seawolves leading by just three in the third quarter, Gowins broke off a 65-yard run for a score that answered a VMI scoring drive. In the fourth stanza, he answered another Keydet score with a 32-yard touchdown run that iced the game for Stony Brook. His 1,310 yards this season is a school record and the highest total for a freshman in FCS this season.
