No. 19 UMass Deals Stony Brook Lax A 17-8 Defeat

Amherst, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts used a big third quarter to break open a close game en route to a 17-8 victory in men's lacrosse action this afternoon at Richard F. Garber Field. Five different Minutemen scored in the first quarter to give UMass a 5-0 lead. Junior Marc Morley opened the scoring at the 7:47 mark. Senior Alex Racioppi followed with his first goal of the season. Junior Don Little, senior Kevin Dell and senior Jeff Seals closed out the first quarter scoring. Stony Brook battled back in the second quarter, outscoring the Minutemen 5-2. George LaFlare got the Seawolves on the board with his first collegiate goal at 10:09 of the second stanza. After another UMass tally, SB ripped off three straight goals sparked by Matt Toner's first of the season. Goals by Kevin Pall and Jon Tompkins brought the Seawolves within 6-4 before Racioppi extended the lead to 7-4 with 1:22 to go before the break. Stony Brook struck back quickly as Tris Gillen took a feed from Toner only 35 seconds later and the score was 7-5 at halftime. UMass came out quickly in the second half, scoring seven goals in the first eight minutes of the third quarter. Seals netted his second of the game 16 seconds into the quarter. Junior Dan Paccione followed with his first goal of the season to give the Minutemen a 9-5 lead. Junior All-American defender Matt McFarland scored his first career goal at the 12:39 mark. Senior Jeremy Guski then scored three of the next four goals, with Little netting the other, to give UMass a 14-5 lead. Pall had the lone tally of the quarter for Stony Brook. In the fourth quarter, Kunkel added his second of the game and fourth of the year, while Little completed his hat trick. Sophomore Chris Fiore scored his second of the season to conclude the UMass scoring. Toner and Tompkins closed out the scoring for SB in the final period. Pall and Toner each had two goals and an assist on the afternoon. Tom Bushy was outstanding in goal in his first start of the season. He stopped 17 UMass shots in three quarters of action. Steve Armsworthy finished out the game in the fourth quarter and made three stops. UMass senior goaltender Chris Campolettano made 10 saves while allowing six goals. The Seawolves return home to face Wagner on Wednesday afternoon. Face-off is 3:30 p.m.
