Stony Brook Laxers Outlast Fairfield In A Shootout At Seawolves Field, 14-12
March 18, 2001
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Kevin Pall scored five times and Matt Toner piled up a career-high six points as Stony Brook earned a hard fought 14-12 victory over Fairfield Sunday afternoon, giving the Seawolves their first win of the season. The loss drops the Stags to 1-4. With Stony Brook (1-3) holding a 12-8 lead heading into the fourth quarter, things began to get interesting. Tom Werney began the Stags' rally with his fourth goal of the game at the 13:06 mark and Rob Scipioni followed with two straight goals only 1:10 apart and Fairfield was within one at 12-11. A man-up goal by Tris Gillen at 7:06 extended SB's lead to two but Scipioni answered again only minutes later and the lead was once again at one. But it would be penalites that would undo the Stags' comeback. Matt Buecker was whistled for holding with 4:49 to go and Kevin Pall made Fairfield pay with his fifth goal of the game, taking a pass from Gillen and firing it past C.J. Kemp for a 14-12 advantage. The Stags were unable to recover as Stony Brook held on for its first win of the year. Fairfield was hit for six penalties in the final quarter and 10 for the game for a total of 9:00 minutes in penalites for the game. It may have been chilly outside, but things heated up quickly this afternoon in what was a wild affair at Seawolves Field. Fairfield got on the board first with Werney's first of the game at the 13:05 mark. SB roared back with three staight goals in the span of 42 seconds later in the quarter. Denis Scannell scored his first goal of the season at 11:21, taking a beautiful cross field pass from Matt Toner to whip it by Kemp to even the score at one. It was to be the first of four assists for Toner, who also had two goals to his credit. Only eight seconds later, Dennis Nafte won the faceoff and screamed towards the Stags' net before dishing the ball off to Toner who fired a low shot into the net for a 2-1 lead. Pall added another only 34 seconds later and the Seawolves were up 3-1. The Stags responded with three straight goals of their own as Werney added another and Troy Bamann added a pair to give FU a 4-3 lead. Pall evened the score at four but Marc Torrey scored with 44 seconds to go in the first period and the Stags held a 5-4 advantage after one period. Stony Brook lead 8-7 at the break and extended its lead in the third quarter and Tom Mazeika's first goal of the season at the 3:29 mark gave SB a 12-8 edge which set the stage for the frenzied final 15 minutes. Pall's five-goal game marked the second time it he has accomplished the feat. Last year, he notched five versus Manhattan. Toner eclipsed his previous high point total of four. Tom Bushy was solid in goal for Stony Brook, making 15 saves on the afternoon. Kemp finished with 15 stops as well. The win snaps a six-game losing streak for Stony Brook dating back to last season. SB is back in action next Saturday when it plays host to Navy. Face-off is 1:00 p.m.
