Men's Lacrosse Falls In Final Seconds To Quinnipiac 12-11
March 29, 2003 Hamden, Conn. - Josh Murray's goal with 0:00 remaining on the game clock lifted Quinnipiac (2-6, 1-1) to a 12-11 win over Stony Brook in an America East lacrosse matchup Saturday afternoon. The goal marked an exciting finish to a game which saw Stony Brook (3-5, 1-1) tie the game with 40 seconds remaining in regulation. After the Seawolves took an early 1-0 lead only 1:47 into the game on a goal by Adam Marksberry, the Bobcats scored three straight times to go up 3-1. Stony Brook recovered quickly and a goal by Kevin Shea and a pair of tallies by Jason Cappadoro gave the visitors a 4-3 lead after one quarter. Stony Brook maintained a 6-5 lead at the half and extended it to 8-5 on George LaFlare's man-up goal at the 8:37 mark of the third quarter. It looked as though the Seawolves had made it 9-5 minutes later off the stick off Sean Quinlan, but his goal was waved off for a crease violation. Quinnipiac gained some momentum after the disallowed goal, scoring four straight times to go up 9-8 with 13:05 to play. The Seawolves tied it at nine on Sean Farrell's goal at 10:05 but again the Bobcats answered with back-to-back goals to hold a 11-9 lead heading into the final five minutes. Shea then tallied his third goal of the game off a fast break at 4:33 of the fourth quarter and with under a minute to go, Cappadoro picked off an errant clear attempt by Quinnipiac and passed the ball to a wide open Shea in front of the goal who buried it with 40 seconds remaining in regulation. Stony Brook controlled the ensuing face-off but turned the ball over with under 10 seconds to go. The Bobcats cleared the ball up the middle to Murray who fired a 25-yard bounce shot that appeared to elude goalie Jeff Slater after the horn sounded. After a brief huddle by the referees, it was determined that the ball entered the goal before the horn had sounded. Shea enjoyed his best day in a Seawolf uniform, tallying four goals and two assists. LaFlare and Cappadoro each had two goals and two assists while rookie Marksberry finished with a goal and an assist. Kyle Pearl was a standout on the defense end again, recording 10 ground balls for the second straight game while Slater made 12 stops in the cage. Stony Brook is back in action on Wednesday night when it travels to Delaware for a non-conference matchup. Face-off is 7:30 p.m. |
