#4 Army Edges Men's Lacrosse In Overtime 10-9
April 5, 2005
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Jim Wagner tied the game at 9 with 1:38 left in regulation and then won it at 2:17 of overtime to lift No. 4 Army to a 10-9 win over Stony Brook in a thriller at LaValle Stadium on Tuesday night. With the win Army improved to 8-1 while the Seawolves dipped to 5-3. Trailing 8-7 in the fourth quarter, Stony Brook's Bo Tripodi got SB even at 8:08 and then Larry Cerasi pushed the Seawolves in front when he converted a feed from Jason Cappadoro at the 6:17 mark. The Seawolves had possession in the offensive zone with under two minutes to go, but a Army double team forced a turnover and set up the Black Knights with a chance to tie. Wagner made no mistake just seconds later when he took a pass from John Walker and fired it past goalie Errol Wilson to knot the game at 9. Wilson had replaced starter Brendan Callahan who went down with an injury at the 9:12 mark of the fourth quarter. After winning the faceoff, Army set up its offense and Wagner's roll dodge made a Stony Brook defender slip and give him just enough room to get off a shot that rolled under Wilson for the game-winner. Stony Brook roared out to a 5-0 advantage over the first 25 minutes of the game but the Black Knights struck for three goals over a span of 3:30 late in the second quarter, including a goal from Brian Green just five seconds before the half to send the teams into the break at 5-3.
Army took its first lead of the game at 8-7 on a tally by Matt Scheel with 9:44 to go in the game. Cappadoro led Stony Brook with a goal and four assists while Rhys Duch notched a career-high three goals and an assist. Wilson took the loss in relief of Callahan. John Walker led the Black Knights with two goals and three assists while Wagner finished with a pair of goals and two assists. Adam Fullerton was outstanding in goal and made 10 saves to earn the win. Stony Brook is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Trinity College to take on Hartford. Face-off is 4 p.m. |
