Stony Brook, N.Y. - Denis Scannell's (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur HS) unassisted goal with 1:11 remaining lifted Stony Brook to a thrilling 10-9 comeback win over Villanova Saturday afternoon at Seawolves Field. The win was the fourth straight for Stony Brook which improved to 7-3 while the Wildcats slipped to 3-5.

Villanova jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the first quarter before Stony Brook responded with a three-goal run of its own in the second. Steve Conlon (Reheboth, Del./Cape Henlopen HS) tallied twice to trim the lead to 3-2 and Brian Abrams' man-up goal at 8:49 knotted the game at 3-3.

The Wildcats again went ahead when Brian Marks scored an unassisted goal at 5:24 and 36 seconds later Matt Lucas bounced a shot past Seawolves' goalie Steve Armsworthy to help the visitors take a 5-3 lead into the break. The Wildcats then surged out to an 8-4 advantage in the third quarter to set the stage for a dramatic comeback for the Seawolves.

Stony Brook scored five straight times, four of which came in the final period. A George LaFlare (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst HS) goal cut VU's lead to 8-5 after three quarters but it was Matt Campolettano (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Chaminade HS) who struck at 14:08 of the fourth to ignite the Seawolves rally. Tris Gillen (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego HS) scored less than two minutes later and Campolettano followed with his second of the game 34 seconds after that to make it 8-8 with 11:47 to play. Kevin Pall (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun HS), the Division I leader in goals per game, gave the Seawolves their first lead at the 10:05 mark off a feed from Scannell. Brian Marks then answered back as the Wildcats used their powerful man-up team to capitalize on a Stony Brook penalty to pull even with 6:46 remaining.

After a Villanova turnover late in the game, the Seawolves gained possession in the Wildcats end of the field. Scannell dodged his defender and rolled to the middle of the field firing a bounce shot that found its way over the shoulder of Sean Philbin for the game-winning goal.

Campolettano, Gillen and Conlon each finished with two goals while Armsworthy made nine stops to earn his sixth win of the year. Stony Brook will be in action again next Saturday when they travel to Albany. Face-off is 1:00 p.m.
