The Lions Dominate Stony Brook In Final Game Of Season

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - April 28, 2001 -- #15 Penn State defeated Stony Brook 17-5 today in the final game of the 2001 season. The first quarter went by quickly with each team's defense keeping the other from scoring. Penn State's senior Randy Kleinman (Broomall, Pa.) scored the game's first goal off of an assist from junior Tim Emmick (Corning, N.Y.). The Lions scored twice more in the first quarter and allowed the Seawolves only one goal by Kevin Pall with 0:56 left to play. The score at the end of the first quarter was 3-1 with the Lions leading the match. In the second quarter both teams were able to advance their offenses with the Lions scoring five goals and the Seawolves scoring three goals. Kleinman scored twice in the second, earning himself a hat-trick. Scoring twice were junior Will Driscoll (Fairport, N.Y.) and senior Michael Kern (Columbus, Ohio). The score at the end of the first half was 8-4 in favor of Penn State. The Lions dominated the third quarter scoring four goals, including two by Driscoll and another from Kern. Senior face-off specialist Kevin Haggerty (Lido Beach, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal. Entering the fourth and final quarter, the Lions led the game 12-4. Stony Brook would only overcome Penn State's defense once in the fourth quarter to score their final goal of the game. Stony Brook's Matt Toner scored for the Seawolves with just under 10 minutes to play. Freshmen Dan Geiger (New Canaan, Conn.) and Greg Hale (Pittsford, N.Y.) were each able to earn goals for the Lions. Sophomore Bill Farrell (Forest Hill, Md.) also scored his first Penn State goal. The Lions never let go of their early lead and won their final game 17-5. All three Penn State goalies saw action today. Senior Matt Vallone (Corning, N.Y.) played 43:30 minutes and earned 9 saves. Vallone allowed only 4 goals. Sophomore Chris Garrity (Annapolis, Md.) played 4:10 minutes and earned 3 saves and 0 goals allowed. Senior Ian Kupferberg (Norwalk, Conn.) finished the game, playing 12:40 minutes. Kupferberg earned 3 saves and one goal allowed. This brings Penn State's 2001 record to 7-6 overall, and 2-4 in the ECAC. Stony Brook finishes the season 7-7 and 1-5 in the ECAC.
