PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Cornell Big Red downed the Stony Brook Seawolves 12-3, before the UMass Minutemen ran away from the Fairfield Stags 17-4 in the North first round of the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse tournament at Brown Stadium on Saturday. In the first game of the day, Cornell scored the first seven goals of the game and never looked back on its way to a convincing 12-3 win. Senior goalkeeper Justin Cynar (Massapequa, NY) made 12 saves in net for Cornell. "This is the first time in a long time that we've had the chance to advance to the second round, and the guys have responded well to that" said Cornell head coach Jeff Tambroni after the game. Sophomore attackman George LaFlare (Lindenhurst, NY) led Stony Brook with a goal and an assist. Senior goalkeeper Steve Armsworthy (Leonardtown, MD) made seven saves for the Seawolves. "We were able to get some good shots to remain in the game in the first half, and we struck out on those chances, " said Stony Brook head coach John Espey. In the afternoon's second game, UMass senior midfielder Don Little (Clifton Park, NY) tallied four goals and an assist while senior attackman Dan Paccione (Amityville, NY) added three goals and an assist to give the Minutemen a 17-4 victory. Freshman goalkeeper Bill Schell (Mahopac, NY) had eight saves in 56:20 for the Minutemen. "Our defense and goaltender did a super job today. They allowed us to relax on offense and gave us opportunities," said UMass head coach Greg Cannelle. Junior midfielder Justin Geluso (Greenlawn, NY) led Fairfield with two goals. Junior goalkeeper C.J. Kemp (Potomac, MD) had 11 saves for the Stags in 51:16 of action. "We missed a lot of key transition opportunities in the second half that could have changed the flow of the game, " said Fairfield head coach Ted Spencer. Cornell will play Virginia and Umass will take on Johns Hopkins in the quarterfinals at Johns Hopkins on Sunday, May 19. |
