Men's Lacrosse Battles For Regular Season Conference Crown At UMBC

April 28, 2006

Backdrop

With the America East regular season crown on the line Saturday evening, Stony Brook and UMBC will battle as two of the hottest teams in the conference. Both squads are 4-0 in league play.

Last Time Out

Ryan Maehr netted three goals in a 18-8 loss to No. 2 Hofstra on Tuesday evening at LaValle Stadium. After being tied, 2-2, at the end of the first period, Hofstra used a 9-2 run spanning the second and third quarter to break the game open. Adam Marksberry tallied two goals and an assist while Jason Cappadoro registered a goal and an assist.

Versus UMBC

The two teams meet for the 11th time on Saturday night with UMBC holding a 10-6 series advantage. Stony Brook has won the last three meetings, including upsetting the No. 1 seeded Retreivers in last year's America East Tournament.

First Place Seawolves

With a perfect 4-0 mark in conference play, the Seawolves meet up with UMBC with a chance to win their first-ever America East regular season title. Stony Brook has never before had a 4-0 mark in conference play and has never finished higher than a No. 3 seed in the America East tournament. A win over UMBC would not only give SB its first regular season title but would also mean that the Seawolves would host the America East tourney that begins on May 5.

On The Mark Adam Marksberry has registered 16 goals and 12 assists on the season. His 78 career goals (8th) and 53 career assists (6th) rank among the best in program history. He also ranks ninth in total points with 126.

National Rankings The Seawolves are ranked 12th in the country in scoring offense, netting 10.17 goals per game. Jason Cappadoro, who leads the America East in assists with 29, is third in assists per game (2.4) and 14th in points per game (3.45). Bo Tripodi is also seventh in the country in goals per game with 2.42. Jim Astea is 11th in the nation in ground balls per game with 5.67 a contest.

Setting The Table

In Stony Brook's last seven games, Jason Cappadoro has piled up 24 assists, an average of 3.8 per game. He is now averaging 2.4 assists per game which ranks third in the nation. His career total of 100 assists ranks first among active Division I players. He is now ahead of Navy's Jon Birsner of Navy who has 98.

You Can Find Me In The Club

With his assist against Hofstra, Cappadoro entered the century club, becoming the first player in school history to record 100 career assists.

Tough Schedule

Tonight's game marks the fourth team that SB has faced that was ranked in the Top 20 on the day of the game. However, nine of SB's 14 opponents have been ranked in the Top 20 at some point this season.

48 And Counting

Senior Jason Cappadoro's point scoring streak has reached 48 games. The last time he did not register a single point was during his freshman season against Delaware on April 2, 2003. Cappadoro has at least one point in 54 of the 56 games he has played in at Stony Brook.

Bo Knows Goals

Sophomore Bo Tripodi's hat trick against Binghamton was his sixth of the season which gave him 29 goals in 2006, equalling his total from the freshman season. He currently ranks second in the America East at 2.42 goals per game.
