Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook men's lacrosse team will face Cornell in the first round of the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse as the 2002 field was announced Sunday night. Stony Brook will face the sixth-seeded Big Red at noon at Brown stadium on the campus of Brown University on Saturday, May 11.

For the first time ever, the Seawolves will participate in the 12-team tournament as this year's field consists of six automatic qualifiers and six at-large teams. Stony Brook received an automatic bid by virtue of its America East title victory over Albany on Saturday afternoon.


The matchups are as follows:
First round:
At Brown, May 11
No. 5 Georgetown vs. Manhattan
No. 6 Cornell vs. Stony Brook
At Delaware, May 12
No. 7 Duke vs. Hobart
No. 8 Massachusetts vs. Fairfield

The first round byes were received by No. 1 Johns Hopkins, No. 2 Syracuse, No. 3 Virginia and No. 4 Princeton.

"I hope this is the first of many championships for Stony Brook," head coach John Espey said. "I am proud of what we have accomplished and look forward to our matchup with an outstanding Cornell team next weekend."

The win over Albany gave Stony Brook (10-6) its first ever conference title and first double-digit win season since the 1990 when it won 12 games.
