Gaither's Goal Gives Men's Soccer A 1-0 Win Over Binghamton
Sept. 12, 2001
Binghamton, N.Y. - Jamie Gaither scored his second gamewinner of the season on an assist from Jude Osei Bonsu in the 21st minute to lead Stony Brook (2-0-1) to a 1-0 win over Binghamton (0-4) Wednesday afternoon. The game, originally scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, was postponed due to the attack on New York City and Washington, D.C. Immediately after kickoff, both teams paused to observe a moment of silence for victims, their families, and rescue workers involved in the tragedy. After 20 scoreless minutes, Gaither fired a hard shot from the left corner of the box that found the upper right corner of the net nearly midway through the first half. Goalkeeper Dan Ferrin and the Seawolves defense made Gaither's goal stand up, as the Bearcats got off just two shots that threatened to even the score. One caromed off the crossbar and another, with just a minute remaining in the game, Ferrin grabbed to preserve the win for Stony Brook.
Ferrin had two saves on the afternoon as the Seawolves improved to 2-0-1 on the year. Binghamton remained winless at 0-4. Stony Brook's games against Manhattan (Thursday) and at Adelphi (Saturday) have been postponed in the wake of Tuesday's tragic events. The men's soccer team will be back in action on September 25 when they play host to Sacred Heart. Kick-off is 4 p.m. |
