Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - After a scoreless first half, the Stony Brook men's soccer team (4-0) netted two goals in the second stanza to notch a 2-0 win over Howard (0-7-1), the Seawolves' fourth straight shutout to begin the 2000 season. In a physical contest that included a combined 52 fouls, Stony Brook outshot the Bison 11-1 in the first half, but Howard goalkeeper Lyndon Burgess made seven saves and the Seawolves remained unable to connect. The Seawolves finally got on the board in the 50th minute when Burgess fouled Stony Brook's Ivan Perez in the box. Senior midfielder Juan Serna connected on the penalty kick to give the Seawolves a 1-0 edge. Junior forward Everett Watts tallied his third goal of the season at the 71:07 mark when he slipped the ball past Burgess off assists from freshman forward Shane Arikian and freshman midfielder Dave Mittan for the 2-0 final score. The victory, which was Stony Brook's first contest in the Atlantic Soccer Conference, marks the best start for Stony Brook in 19 years, when the Seawolves began the 1981 season with a 5-0-1 record. It also equals the win total from last season, when USB finished 4-13-1. Stony Brook returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 20, when the Seawolves host Lafayette at 4:30 p.m. at University Field.
