Men's Soccer Battles Maryland to 1-1 Tie in Double Overtime

Oct. 2, 2007

Box Score

College Park, Md. - A goal from Mahamadou Simpara (Bamako, Mali) in the 60th minute tied the game at one as the Stony Brook men's soccer team battled the University of Maryland to a 1-1 double overtime tie at Ludwig Field on Tuesday night. Stony Brook has its first tie of the 2007 season and is now 6-3-1. Maryland is 3-4-2.

Even with Maryland's nine shots to Stony Brook's one, the Seawolves entered the locker room scoreless, thanks to Dawid Ditrich's (Gdansk, Poland) three saves in the first half.

In the 56th minute, Maryland would get on the board following a goal from Billy Cortes. The Seawolves did not panic and would answer just five minutes later. Petar Rakovic (Kragujevac, Serbia) and Michael Palacio (Long Beach, N.Y.) would set up Simpara off a cross into the box from right to left. Simpara sent into a header towards the goal freezing Terrapins goalie Thorne Holder. Simpara's fourth goal of the season tied the game at one.

Ditrich finished with five saves on the night in helping Stony Brook salvage a tie.

Stony Brook is back to the state of Maryland when it opens up America East play against UMBC on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off is slated for 1 pm.
