Final Stats

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Stony Brook men's soccer team battled Hartford in a hard-fought game on Saturday, but the Hawks came away with a 2-1 victory in their America East COnference opener.

After Stony Brook (1-9-1, 0-2 America East) knotted the game at 1-1, it took less than three minutes for the Hawks (3-6, 1-0 America East) to score the gamewinner. In the 72nd minute, senior Asaf Lubezky converted a rebound that resulted from a free kick by fellow senior Guy Primor to give Hartford the 2-1 advantage.

The Hawks got things going in a hurry when sophomore Alon Lubezky gave Hartford a 1-0 lead just 4:03 into the game. The goal, which came on a flurry in the penalty box, was Lubezky's seventh of the season. Primor picked up his first of two assists on the play. The Hawks threatened several more times throughout the half, but Stony Brook goalkeeper Dan Ferrin made some excellent saves to keep the Hawks at bay, and the score remained 1-0 at halftime.

The Hawks kept pressing, and got a golden opportunity in the 55th minute. A shot by Alon Lubezky was stopped by a diving Ferrin, but with Ferrin still on the ground, Hartford's Easton Wilson collected the rebound and fired a shot towards the goal. A Stony Brook defender was there to kick the ball out, and Alon Lubezky's attempt went just wide.

The Seawolves finally countered at the 69:44 mark. After a Stony Brook throw-in found its way about 10 yards from the Hartford goal, junior Anthony Barberio dribbled through the Hawk defense and slipped a shot past Hartford keeper Ryan Carr for the equalizer. The goal marked Barberio's second of the year.

However, the tie was short-lived, as Asaf Lubezky netted the gamewinner just 2:23 later.

Both teams totalled 15 shots and seven corner kicks during the game.

Carr made four saves in net for the Hawks, who snapped a three-game losing streak with the win. Stony Brook's Ferrin stopped 10 shots.

The Seawolves return to action when they travel to take on Rider in a non-conference clash on Wednesday, Oct. 9.
