Stats

Orono, Maine - It took almost 10 extra minutes, but the Stony Brook men's soccer team earned its first-ever America East win on Sunday as the Seawolves defeated Maine 1-0 in overtime. The victory ends SBU's three-game skid and improves the Seawolves to 4-3-1 overall, 1-2 in the America East.

The game remained scoreless at the end of regulation, but freshman Jude Osei Bonsu came through with the game on the line for the second time this year. In the 100th minute, Kenyatta Montgomery crossed the ball to Osei Bonsu, who headed it past Maine goalkeeper Mat Cosgriff to give Stony Brook the win. For Osei Bonsu, it is the second time this season he has scored a gamewinning header in overtime.

With just a minute to play in regulation, Stony Brook scored what appeared to be the gamewinner but the goal was disallowed because of goalkeeper interference. The Black Bears had an excellent chance of their own to grab the victory, when Mike Manfre dribbled the ball through traffic and broke in alone on Seawolves goalkeeper Dan Ferrin, but his shot was just wide of the net.

On the afternoon, Ferrin made six saves to register his fourth win and second shutout of the season.

With the loss, the Black Bears fall to 1-7-0 overall, 0-3 in the America East.

Stony Brook continues America East play when they face Towson at home on Friday. Kickoff is 4 p.m.
