Men's Soccer Shuts Out Maine For First Conference Win
Oct. 19, 2002
Stony Brook, N.Y. - A goal in each half led the Stony Brook men's soccer team to its first America East Conference victory with a 2-0 shutout of Maine at Seawolves Stadium Saturday morning. In the 28th minute, sophomore Mike Salvador crossed the ball into the box and freshman Payton Webb headed the ball into the goal past Maine goalkeeper Chad Mongeon for a 1-0 lead. The Seawolves (2-11-1, 1-3) added to the lead just four minutes into the second half. Senior Kevin Cameron sent the ball into the box, which junior Shane Arikian collected and kicked over the head of Mongeon. Two Maine defenders managed to kick the ball out of the goal, but they kicked it right to sophomore Josh Allen, who banged home the rebound for the 2-0 lead. Maine (1-10-2, 0-6) kept pressing but came up empty, despite an excellent chance with five minutes remaining in the game. Midfielder Cooper Friend got off a shot to the far post, but the ball caromed off the crossbar to preserve the shutout for the Seawolves. Stony Brook goalkeeper Dan Ferrin finished with five saves for his second shutout of the season. Maine's Mongeon had two stops. Stony Brook returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 23, when the Seawolves travel to take on Binghamton. Kickoff is 2 p.m. |
