Late Save Helps Maine Salvage 2-1 Win Over Men's Soccer

Oct. 19, 2008

Final Stats

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Maine goalkeeper Nemanja Kostic made a point-blank save on freshman Jherrett Maroney's (Cincinnatus, N.Y.) shot as time expired in the game to preserve the Black Bears' 2-1 win over the Stony Brook men's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at LaValle Stadium. Stony Brook is 2-11-2, 0-3-1 in America East while Maine is 4-7-2, 1-3-1.

After Stony Brook regained possession in the final minute of the game, Maroney found himself with the ball but as time wound down, Kostic made the save to preserve the Maine victory.

Neither team had many scoring opportunities in the first 25 minutes of the game. The first chance went to Maine when Dimitri Anastasiou was by himself from 20 yards out but his attempt sailed high. The Black Bears tallied the game's first goal when Justin Facer headed the ball towards the goal. Senior Dawid Ditrich (Gdansk, Poland) tried to make the save but Alex Rickett headed the ball in the goal for the 1-0 lead.

Ditrich kept Stony Brook in the game making a gorgeous save in the 36th minute. A blast from Marc Goulet was saved as Ditrich stretched out and dove to his right while clutching the ball. Ditrich made one more first-half save as the score remained, 1-0.

Stony Brook came out and nearly tied the game just three minutes into the second half. A header from junior Damion Brown (Kingston, Jamaica) was saved by Kostic and a corner kick ensued. The pressure continued as a throw-in into the box from junior Collin Geoghegan (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) found the head of sophomore Michele Aquino (Franklin Square, N.Y.) who just missed tying the game when the attempt went wide.

The Seawolves maintained their offensive focus and found the back of the net in the 57th minute. Sophomore Mark Secko (Shoreham, N.Y.) sent a ball into the box. Junior James Palumbo (Carmel, N.Y.) corralled the ball and scored past Kostic's left side to tie the game at one.

The game stayed at 1-1 until the 87th minute. Following a clear from Maine, Rickett got the ball and on a breakaway, dribbled 35 yards and scored past Ditrich as Maine re-took the lead.

Kostic made two saves in the final moments of the game with both coming off of shots from Maroney.

Stony Brook is back at home to host New Hampshire on Wednesday evening. Kick-off is slated for 7 pm.
