Brown's Goal in 60th Minute Gives Men's Soccer 1-0 Win Over Albany

Oct. 24, 2007

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Maurice Brown (Clarendon, Jamaica) scored his third goal of the season and Dawid Ditrich (Gdansk, Poland) recorded his fourth shutout of the season as the Stony Brook men's soccer team snapped its two-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over in-state rival Albany, at LaValle Stadium on Wednesday night. With the win the Seawolves go to 8-6-2, 2-3-2 in conference play. Albany is 2-9-3, 1-2-2.

Stony Brook had three quality scoring chances in the first half. In the 27th minute, Matt Avellino (Merrick, N.Y.) took a shot from 28 yards out that Albany keeper Steward Ceus was able to save. Oscar Leis (Ozone Park, N.Y.) would have an opportunity of his own when he took a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. The Seawolves' best chance to score came in the 37th minute. After a foul on Albany, Michael Palacio (Long Beach, N.Y.) took a free kick from the right side. Mahamadou Simpara (Bamako, Mali) took the kick and headed it just wide.

The Seawolves finally got on the board in the 60th minute. After a throw from the right side, a scramble in front created an opportunity for Brown. Brown found the ball on his right foot and put it past Ceus for a 1-0 advantage.

Nearly four minutes later, Diego Acero (Greenport, N.Y.) took a shot from about 38 yards away. As Ceus came to play the ball, he slipped and parried the ball past the goal line for a Stony Brook corner kick.

Albany's best scoring chance came in the 80th minute when Don Johnson's shot went just wide and hit the side of the net.

Stony Brook is back in action when it travels to Maine to face the Black Bears on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 pm.
