Stony Brook Swimming Sweeps Iona and St. Francis (N.Y.)

Dec. 4, 2007

Complete Results

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Both the Stony Brook men and women's swimming teams won in convincing fashion over the Iona Gaels and St. Francis Terriers Tuesday night at University Pool. The men improved to 4-4 on the season with their 76-35 victory of Iona and 87-20 win over St. Francis. The women notched their first two wins of the season in beating Iona, 76-35, and St. Francis, 87-20.

The men's team tallied 10 first-place finishes on the night, highlighted by freshman Lukasz Ochmanski's (Lodz, Poland) record-breaking performance in the 500-yard freestyle. Not only did Ochmanski shatter the team record, which he already owned, when he finished in a time of 4:31.64, but he also broke the University Pool record which was set in 1984.

When asked about Ochmanski's performance, coach David Alexander simply replied, "He was scary fast."

The men's other top finishers were: 200-yard medley relay team (1:38.27), freshman Nathan Fleshman (Monroe, Mich.) in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:34.23), freshman Eric Gaffey (Bohemia, N.Y.) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.08), freshman Jonathan Eldor (South Setauket, N.Y.) in the 50-yard freestyle (22.17), Ochmanski in the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.25), junior Alexander Demin (Staten Island, N.Y.) in the one-meter (152.05) and three-meter (165.20) dives, senior Alexander Kissel (Amityville, N.Y.) in the 100-yard freestyle (48.35) and junior Rafael Labour, Jr. (New York City, N.Y.) in the 100-yard backstroke (52.50).

On the women's side, the Seawolves finished with seven first-place finishes, including two from freshman Maja Gudelj (Split, Croatia) in the 100-yard freestyle (54.08) and the 50-yard freestyle (25.11).

The women's other top finishers were: 200-yard medley relay (1:53.72), freshman Lisa Jackson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:13.89), senior Courtney Teague (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.19), freshman Talia Schizzano (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) in the one-meter dive (133.45) and junior Lucy Liu (Bronx, N.Y.) in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.77).

The men's team will be in action this Saturday against the U.S. Merchant Marines at University Pool starting at 1 pm.

The women won't be in action until January, 16th when both teams travel to Easton, Penn., to take on Lafayette and Binghamton.
