Men's Tennis Glides Past New Jersey Tech in Florida, 7-0

March 20, 2008

Naples, Fla. - It was a successful end to the spring break trip to Florida for the Stony Brook men's tennis team. On its final day of competition the Seawolves easily defeated New Jersey Tech by a 7-0 score. Over the course of the day not one Seawolf dropped a set in their singles matches.

In the opening doubles matches Stony Brook won all three by comfortable margins to take the first point of the day. The freshman duo of Patrick Baldoch (Brisbane, Australia) and Will Allen (Winchester, England) won the first match for Stony Brook, taking an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles. In the No. 2 doubles match freshman Ivan Rummel (Budapest, Hungary) and sophomore Jon Epstein (Silver Spring, Md.) took down their opponents 8-4 to clinch the point for the Seawolves.

Stony Brook had no problems in singles action either, especially at the lower three flights where the Seawovles won all three without surrendering more than two games in a set. Epstein and junior Juan Carlos Cotto (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) dispatched their opponents at No. 3 and No. 6 by identical 6-0, 6-2 scores. Junior Youssef Fassi-Fehri (Fes, Morocco) also won his match by the same score, downing Jonathan Lang in the No. 2 singles match.

At No. 5 sophomore Alex Markovich (Brooklyn, N.Y.) defeated Ramy Lawandy by a 6-2, 6-2 score to make it four matches in which SBU opponents failed to score more than two wins in a set. In the No. 3 match Rummel defeated Cosmin Chiujdea, 7-5, 6-2, while freshman Artem Baradach (Minsk, Belarus) completed the sweep for Stony Brook with his 7-5, 7-5 win at the No. 1 flight.
