Men's Tennis Cruises Past Hofstra

April 9, 2008

Hempstead, N.Y. - It was a dominating performance for the men's tennis team today as Stony Brook dropped just a doubles match on its way to a 7-0 win over Hofstra. Freshmen Artem Baradach (Minsk, Belarus) won matches at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles to help the Seawolves to the sweep.

Two of the three doubles matches between the two teams were closely contested. Freshman Ivan Rummel (Budapest, Hungary) and sophomore Jon Epstein (Silver Spring, Md.) took the first win for Stony Brook with an 8-3 triumph at No. 3. Things were a bit closer at No. 1 where Baradach and sophomore Alex Markovich (Brooklyn, N.Y.) came out on top by an 8-6 margin to give Stony Brook the doubles point. The Seawolves almost made it a clean sweep at No. 2 where the team of junior Youssef Fassi-Fehri (Fes, Morocco) and sophomore Ilan Shvartz (Haifa, Israel) dropped a close 8-7 (5) decision.

In singles play it was all Stony Brook. Rummel had an easy time of it at No. 2 where he defeated Nenad Radakovic by a 6-1, 6-1 score. Epstein lost only three games in his win at No. 5 while Markovich won 8-4 over Alex Hosner at No. 6. In the No. 1 slot Baradach also won in straight sets, with Fassi-Fehri holding off Stian Tvedt at No. 3 by a 6-4, 7-6 (4) score. Shvartz had to battle through three sets in his match at No. 4, but in the end he was triumphant, completing the singles sweep for the Seawolves with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win over Tytus Stempniewicz.

Stony Brook will return to America East play this weekend, facing both UMBC and Binghamton at Binghamton. The Seawolves will face off first against the Retrievers on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
