Epstein, Dill Capture UConn Invitational Singles Titles
Sept. 29, 2008
East Hartford, N.Y. - Stony Brook's men's tennis team continues to have a solid fall campaign as the Seawolves turned in an impressive performance at the UConn Invitational over the weekend. Junior Jon Epstein (Silver Spring, Md.) won the Flight B singles title and junior Halvar Dil (Amersfort, Netherlands) took home a share of the Flight C title, while two other players reached the finals of their singles flights. Overall Stony Brook put together a 15-4 record in singles play over the weekend. Epstein knocked off opponents from Bryant and Quinnipiac to reach the semifinals, dropping only three games in a one-set format that was used due to inclement weather causing limited court space. In his semifinal match Epstein came out on top 6-2 over Ben Schueler of Connecticut to reach the finals. On the other side of the bracket senior Youssef Fassi-Fehri (Fes, Morocco) won three straight matches by the same 6-4 score over opponents from Fairfield, Quinnipiac and Bryant to make it an all Stony Brook final. Epstein came away with the championship, defeating his teammate by a 6-2 score. In Flight C singles action Dil was impressive in his march to the semifinals, scoring 6-0 wins in his first two matches. In the semis he took a 6-3 victory over Scott Warden of host Connecticut to reach the finals of the flight. Due to the limited court space the final with Matt Jimmeisbach from Marist was not contested and both were declared co-champions. Sophomore Ivan Rummel (Budapest, Hungary) almost made it two singles titles for the Seawolves in Flight A. He reached the finals of the flight with wins over players from Fairfield and Quinnipiac before taking a close 6-5 (5) win over Kirill Kasyanov of Sacred Heart. His match in the finals was a close one as well, but this time he came out on the short end of a 6-5 (4) score to Loic Sessagesimi from Marist.
In doubles play the Seawolves had one team that reached the semifinals of its flight. The pairing of Fassi-Fehri and freshman Mitch Wong (Tampa, Fla.) scored a pair of 8-2 wins over teams from Boston University and UConn in Flight B before falling to another UConn duo in a close 8-6 match. |
