Men's Tennis Reaches Three Finals Matches at Stony Brook Invitational
Oct. 11, 2009 Stony Brook, N.Y. - Staying at home for a second straight weekend, the Stony Brook men's tennis team saw two singles players and one doubles team reached the finals as play concluded today at the Stony Brook Invitational. Junior Ivan Rummel (Budapest, Hungary) and senior Jon Epstein (Silver Spring, Md.) reached singles finals for the Seawolves, as did the doubles team of senior Halvar Dil (Amersfort, Netherlands) and sophomore Mitch Wong (Tampa, Fla.). Playing in the "A" bracket, Rummel started his weekend off by taking an 8-3 win over Fabio Minami from Queens College. Moving on to the quarterfinals against Andrew Peters of Middlebury College, Rummel dropped a closely contested first set before coming back to take the final two in a hard-fought 6-7 (11-13), 6-3, 10-7 win. He came back once again in the semifinals, storming back in a 1-6, 6-3, 10-8 decision over Andrey Boldarev of Concordia College. In the finals today against top-seed Alex Grubin of Concordia, Rummel fell by a 6-2, 6-2 score. Epstein took an 8-2 win over Jesse Smith from Queens to start his play in the "B" bracket and then took straight sets wins over opponents from Bryant and Concordia to reach today's finals. There he squared off against Andrew Lee from Middlebury, coming back from a first set loss to even the match only to fall in a close 6-4, 1-6, 12-10 loss. In the "A" doubles flight, Dil and Wong started the weekend off with an 8-5 triumph over Polus / Burstein from Queens. They then took an easy 8-0 win over a team from Bowdoin before another 8-5 decision, this time over a duo from Concordia, carried them into the finals. The 8-5 score came up once again in the finals, but this time the Seawolves' duo came out on the short end of the score as Pena/Neely from Bowdoin came up with the victory.
Stony Brook will close out the fall portion of its schedule next weekend when it takes part in the ITA Regional Championships that will be hosted by Dartmouth College. |
