Coach's Corner #4: A Letter From The Desk Of Coach Glassman

Feb. 22, 2008

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Hello Seawolves Tennis Supporters!

This is the first spring edition of the Coach's Corner, a monthly newsletter to keep you informed and up-to-date on Stony Brook Tennis!

The spring dual match season has just gotten underway this month as both the men and women traveled to West Point, NY for match-ups with Army and UConn. The men's squad is the only team to come away with a team victory over the weekend as they shutout UConn 7-0. Playing in the second position, freshman Artem Baradach (Minsk, Belarus'11) picked up the Seawolves lone victory over the Army Black Knights by defeating Sean Harris 6-3, 7-6(8).

The women's squad suffered two 5-2 defeats with four different Seawolves picking up singles wins. In the season opener against Army junior Erica Federgreen (Scottsdale, AZ '09) picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Army at the fourth position and senior co-captain Victoria Vovsha (Brooklyn, NY) earned a hard-fought victory at number six singles by a score of 0-6, 6-2, 6-4. Stony Brook claimed the top two singles spots against UConn as sophomore Paola Rodolfi '10 (Asuncion, Paraguay) won at the top flight destroying Kelly LoRusso 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Claudia Sanua (Bryanston, South Africa '10) picked up her first singles win of the year by defeating Emily Herb in the second position by a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0(6) score.

Overall, it was a good starting point to the season for both squads. We are excited and look forward to action this weekend as we head to Hanover, New Hampshire for a match-up with the Big Green on Saturday and against Marist and Rutgers on Sunday.

The first conference match is rapidly approaching as the teams head to Boston on Sunday March 2nd for matches against Boston University. We would love to see any of you in the area and free on that day to join us as we open up conference play at 10 am.

The second annual Tennis Family FunFest was a great success, and we'd once again like to thank all of our guests and sponsors for supporting us to host such a great event. It was a fun-filled competitive and social evening with lots of tennis, food and raffle prizes. We hope those of you that couldn't make it last year will be able to come out and help support the program in 2009.

The Stony Brook tennis staff would also like to acknowledge those that have taken advantage of the t-shirt offer. WE thank you for finding a way to not only stay connected to Stony Brook and the Tennis Program but also for giving back through your very generous and heartfelt donations. You continue to help our program achieve and experience many great things.

Take care and we'll see you on the other side of the net!!!
