Stony Brook Tennis Teams Down Fairleigh Dickinson

April 9, 2009

Stony Brook, N.Y. -

For the second time this week Stony Brook’s men’s and women’s tennis teams took on a common opponent in a tennis doubleheader, and for the second time both of the Seawolves teams came up with victories as the men defeated the Fairleigh Dickinson, 5-2, while the women triumphed over the Knights, 6-1.

After dropping two of the three doubles matches to fall behind by a point, Stony Brook’s men’s team stormed back in singles play to win five of the six matches. At the top of the lineup junior Halvar Dil (Amersfoort, Netherlands) scored a 6-2, 6-2 win over Andrew Denny while sophomore Ivan Rummel (Budapest, Hungary) picked up a 6-1, 6-2 decision at No. 2. It was pretty much the same down the lineup for the Seawolves, who won Nos. 1-5 in straight sets. Senior Youssef Fassi-Fehri (Fes, Morocco) and freshmen Mitch Wong (Tampa, Fla.) and Bertrand Marcos (Paris, France) recorded the other victories for Stony Brook, which improved to 12-4 with the win.

In the women’s match Stony Brook (9-2) got off to a strong start by winning the top two doubles matches. Junior Paola Rodolfi (Asuncion, Paraguay) and freshman Anna Pieschl (Gothenburg, Sweden) won 8-5 at No. 1, while the freshman team of Gayatri Krishnan (Chennai, India) and Prerana Appineni (Hyderabad, India) took an 8-6 decision at No. 2 to put the Seawolves up 1-0.

Stony Brook did not let up in the singles action, winning four of the five matches that were contested. Freshman Salome Mkervalidze (Brewster, N.Y.) had no trouble in her match at No. 5, taking a 6-0, 6-0 win that started things rolling for the Seawolves. Pieschl and Appineni also picked up victories in straight sets, with Pieschl dropping only two games on her way to a win. Rodolfi picked up the final point of the day for Stony Brook in comeback fashion, shaking off a first set loss to score a 5-7, 6-1 (11-9) win over Ksenia Chernyshova.

Both teams will be back in action next Tuesday, April 14 when they travel to Connecticut to take on Quinnipiac at 2:00 p.m.
