Women's Hoops Pulls Away From Albany on Senior Day 80-71

Feb. 25, 2006

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Sidney Orndorff netted 13 points to lead five Seawolves in double figures as Stony Brook defeated Albany 80-71 on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at the Indoor Sports Complex. The win, coupled with a loss by Boston University gives the Seawolves sole possession of second place in America East standings, moved SB to 17-8 overall and 10-4 in league play. The Great Danes fell to 6-19 and 2-12.

"I'm pleased to get a win in our last home game, especially for our seniors who have really worked hard for this program," said head coach Maura McHugh. "Hopefully that will give us some momentum going into our final two games on the road to finish out the regular season on a high note."

Dana Ferraro (10 points and 14 rebounds) and Jessica Smith (10 points and 12 rebounds) each posted double-doubles, while Mykeema Ford and Kelly Watson finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Farah Vasquez Jacobo and Leah Getz each chipped in with nine points off the bench in the win. Ferraro added a career-high six steals to go with four assists.

Leading by one point seven minutes into the second half, the Seawolves went on an 18-3 run over the next six minutes fueled by 10 points from Ford to go up 63-47 with 7:22 to play.

The Seawolves led by as many as 19 with just over five minutes remaining before the visitors began to chip away at the lead, using a 12-0 run behind seven points from Sherri Mikus to pull back within seven at 73-66 with 58 seconds on the clock. That was as close as they could get, however, as Stony Brook sank 7-of-8 free throws over the final 47 seconds to seal the win.

The Great Danes committed 20 turnovers to just eight for the Seawolves. Stony Brook took advantage, netting 31 points off those turnovers.

Mikus collected a game-high 19 points and six assists, while Jen Schumacher added 14 points and Amanda Ward netted 12 for the Great Danes.

Seniors Jessie Boylan and Danyelle Ingram, who were participating in the last home game of their careers, were both honored in a pregame ceremony, as was head coach Maura McHugh, who collected the 250th collegiate victory of her coaching career on February 22 vs. Hartford.

The Seawolves are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to face UMBC at 7 p.m.
