Jordan's Outstanding Debut Leads Seawolves Past Delaware State, 50-37

Stony Brook, NY - Freshman forward Sherry Jordan had 15 points and 10 rebounds as Stony Brook (1-0) fougth off a sloppy first half to defeat Delaware State (1-2) in its season opener Tuesday night, 50-37. The win snapped a four-game season opening losing streak for the Seawolves, who hadn't won an opener since 1995. The Seawolves shot just 33% in the first half and allowed the Hornets to grab 17 offensive rebounds. However, Erika Shipley's feed to Jordan as time expired led to an easy lay-up as the Seawolves led, 22-20, at the break. There were four ties, nine lead changes and a combined 27 turnovers in the first 20 minutes. Stony Brook took control in the early stages of the second half. After Kimisha Dabney tied the game at 28-28, the Seawolves used a 16-4 run over the next 6:28 to open a 46-32 advantage with 2:41 remaining. Jordan scored the last five points of the run. The Hornets could not get closer than 12 points the rest of the way. Jordan was one of three players in double figures as Jessica Burch collected 11 points and Jill George had 10. George also had a career-high four blocked shots - all coming in the first half. Maggie Triggs collected nine points and four steals. Chavonne Stewart led Delaware State with 12 points and seven rebounds and Kimisha Dabney had eight points and 11 rebounds. The Hornets were hurt by 23% shooting from the field and 28 turnovers. Stony Brook heads to Los Angeles, CA to play in the Loyola-Marymount Tournament this weekend The Seawolves play the host on Friday night at 10:00 pm (EST) and battle either Xavier or UC-Riverside Saturday afternoon. |
