Women's Basketball Looks To Climb In Conference Standings At New Hampshire
Feb. 27, 2003 BACKDROP: The Seawolves look to continue their climb in the America East standings as they travel to take on New Hampshire. Stony Brook enters Saturday's game with a 6-7 record in league play. New Hampshire has won three of its last four games, including Wednesday's 67-66 victory over Boston University, which is currently third in the conference standings. ABOUT THE WILDCATS: New Hampshire's Maren Matthias continued her excellent season on Wednesday against BU, scoring 19 points and grabbing seven rebounds. The center leads the conference in rebounding and is the fourth-leading scorer. The Wildcats shot a season-high 54.5 percent from the floor for the contest, including going 11-for-18 (61.1 percent) in the second half. The 'Cats also made 8-of-15 three-point attempts on the evening (53.3 percent). UNH has bounced back after a six-game losing streak to win three of its last four games. Matthias' 16.5 points per game and 9.8 rebounds per game leads the Wildcats, while forward Geneva Livingston is also averaging double figures with 10.5 points per game. She is also a 39 percent shooter (39-of-101) from three-point territory. Aubrey Danen averages 9.7 points. SERIES HISTORY: Stony Brook leads the all-time series 2-2 and has won the last two meetings with the Wildcats. LAST MEETING - Feb. 2, 2003: Stony Brook did not miss a shot in the final 8:47 to earn a convincing 90-72 victory over New Hampshire at the SBU Sports Complex. The Seawolves nailed 10-of-10 shots down the stretch, including three three-pointers, as a seven-point SBU lead ballooned to as many as 23 on Danyelle Ingram's jumper with 44 seconds remaining. After a somewhat sluggish first half, the Seawolves blistered the nets in the second stanza, connecting on 20-of-31 field goals (64.5 percent). Stony Brook also drilled 5-of-6 three-pointers after managing just 1-of-8 in the first half. New Hampshire's Maren Matthias scored 15 of her game-high 27 points in the second half, but the Wildcats managed to lead only once, when Geneva Livingston's three-pointer gave them a 41-40 edge just 1:22 into the half. The first half was an even battle that saw eight ties. Trailing 38-31 with 2:51 remaining before the break, the Seawolves scored seven straight points, capped by Sherry Jordan's three-point play, to even the game at 38-38 at the break. Jordan led four players in double figures, notching her third double-double of the season with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Jordan also had four steals. Stephanie Barlett equaled her career-high with 22 points and connected on 4-of-7 three-pointers. Danielle DeGiorgio finished with 17 points and six boards, while Ingram added 16 points and five assists. For the Wildcats, Matthias grabbed 11 rebounds to go along with her 27 points, while Livingston scored 12. Ebony Woods finished with 11 points, and Colleen McMullen recorded 10 assists. INJURY UPDATE: Forward Malica Jibowu missed Tuesday's game due to a knee injury. She is day-to-day. Center Meghan Barrett also remains sidelined. She has not practiced since Dec. 30 due to ankle problems and is out indefinitely. LAST TIME OUT: The Seawolves scored the final nine points of the game to hand Binghamton a 54-47 setback at the SBU Sports Complex. Danyelle Ingram's jumper with 3:52 left marked the seventh tie of the game, knotting the game at 44 apiece. The Bearcats countered with a layup by Leala Wegwerth, who later connected on a free throw to give Binghamton a slim 47-45 edge with 1:55 left. But then Sherry Jordan sparked a 9-0 run to lead the Seawolves to the win. Danyelle Ingram's 13 points led three Seawolves in double figures. Bojana Bogetic added 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting, while Jordan added 11 points and seven rebounds. LOOKING AHEAD: The Seawolves return home to close out the regular season, hosting Albany on March 5 and Vermont on March 8. THREELESS: For the first time since the 2000-01, the Seawolves failed to make at least one three-pointer in Tuesday's game. The last time Stony Brook went scoreless from three-point range was Jan. 20, 2001, against Binghamton. Stony Brook had made at least one trey in all 24 games this year with an average of 3.6 per game. SHUTTING DOWN THE BEARCATS: The 47 points scored by Binghamton equals the lowest total by a Seawolves opponent this season. Morgan State also tallied just 47 points in a 61-47 Seawolves victory on Dec. 14. TO THE NINES: Trailing 47-45 against Binghamton with just 1:55 remaining, the Seawolves went on a 9-0 tear to capture the 54-47 victory. Sherry Jordan scored the first five points of the run with a jumper and three free throws. Danielle DeGiorgio iced the game in the final seconds with four free throws. GOING THROUGH DROUGHTS: Both Stony Brook and Binghamton suffered long scoring droughts in Tuesday's game, which included seven ties and seven lead changes. After opening the game with a three-pointer by Jennifer Blues at the 18:48 mark, the Bearcats then went scoreless for nearly 10 minutes. Meanwhile, Stony Brook scored 14 points during that stretch, with Ingram tallying seven of her team-high 13. Leading 19-7 with 4:15 to go before the break, the Bearcats went on a run of their own, outscoring the Seawolves 11-2 to close the half and climb within 21-18 at halftime. The Seawolves were still struggling to score at the beginning of the second half, with their first points coming on a Danyelle Ingram jumper at the 15:23 mark. That basket ended an eight-minute dry spell for the Seawolves. CHARITY COLLECTION: After subpar efforts at the free throw line in the last three games, the Seawolves took advantage of a discrepancy at the charity stripe against Binghamton. Entering the game, Stony Brook had made only 27-of-48 free throws (56 percent) in its last three games. But against the Bearcats, the Seawolves went to the line 25 times compared to just six for Binghamton. Stony Brook connected on 18 free throws (72 percent) and hit seven of its last eight to ice the game. ON THE BOARDS: Stony Brook's struggles on the boards continued against Binghamton, as the Seawolves were outrebounded for the fifth straight game. Stony Brook has lost two of those contests. The Bearcats recorded a 37-30 edge on the boards, including a 22-11 advantage at halftime. The Seawolves have won the battle of the boards in 10 games this year, including five of their eight victories with its most decisive performance against Hartford on Jan. 8. SBU finished with 48 rebounds compared to just 28 for the Hawks, as Sherry Jordan collected a game-high 15 to lead the way. HOME STREAK CONTINUES: Tuesday's victory marked the fourth straight victory for the Seawolves at the SBU Sports Complex. The Seawolves have bounced back after winning just one of their first eight home contests. Stony Brook hopes to extend the streak next week, as the Seawolves close out the regular season with two home games. The last defeat Stony Brook suffered at the SBU Sports Complex came at the hands of Maine, which earned a 66-41 victory on Jan. 25. BOBO IN THE MIDDLE: Sophomore Bojana Bogetic has been an important presence for the Seawolves in the post. Her 12 points against Binghamton marked the fourth time in five games she has scored double figures. During that stretch, she has hit 27-of-47 field goals for 57 percent. INGRAM'S IMPORTANCE: Danyelle Ingram's 13 points against Binghamton marked the second straight game she has led the Seawolves in scoring. She scored 19, just one short of her career-high, against Maine in the previous game. Ingram has scored in double digits in three straight games and five of the Seawolves' last seven. Her 9.4 points per game ranks second on the team. JORDAN WATCH: Sherry Jordan remains in the No. 7 spot on the all-time scoring list with her 11 points against Binghamton. Jordan now has 1,218 career points and has quite an obstacle to reach the No. 6 spot. She needs 114 points to pass Joan Gandolf, who tallied 1,331 points from 1990-94. |
